What Are You Reading?
It’s Friday again, and time for What Are You Reading once again. I know I’ve been remiss for a couple of weeks, but you’ll have to excuse me. The last six weeks or so have been totally out of control. Travel, illness, family drama, and other pressing issues got in my way, but…to paraphrase a certain spooky someone…I’m baaaaaaaa-aaaaaack. More or less. 🙂 So on to the burning question of the day.
I’m re-reading Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Boys, Book 1 in what I think is a trilogy. I have Book 2 waiting for me, but I realized I really wanted to revisit Book 1 before starting it. This is a complicated tale, and I had forgotten some bits and pieces. I also had forgotten how completely beautiful and compelling Chapter 1 of The Raven Boys is. Maggie Stiefvater is an enormously gifted writer. Not just capable of telling great stories, but of using words, phrases, and imagery like no other. She’s who I want to be when I grow up. Her words pull me into her books like no one else’s, and they just don’t let go. I can’t imagine anyone reading the graveyard scene in Chapter 1 and not being caught hook, line, and sinker. I’ve already reviewed this book here and as soon as I finish re-reading it, and then reading the second book, The Dream Thieves, I’ll be reviewing that one, as well.

This summer was a prolific reading summer for me. Currently I’m finishing Last Night in Twisted Night by John Irving and I started the sequel to The Maze Runner, a sci fi for YA, by James Dasher. Very different genres but both are great reads. Thanks Marcia.

The Raven Boys is excellent, but sometimes it is soooo slowwwww! The pacing kills me!

I love the pacing, myself, but I’m from an older generation, and I like the slow build up, and the very carefully drawn out characters. The mounting tension is part of why I love all of Stiefvater’s work. Sometimes I need a break from the slam, bam, kapow of a lot of current fiction. High action is good, but this careful attention to detail speaks to me more. The farther I get into my re-read, the more I’m looking forward to The Dream Thieves. Details are coming back and clicking into place, and I’m drawn into this very unusual plot. And I adore Blue and Gansey. Gansey is so driven and obsessed, and something about him just tugs at me.
I also love the complexity of the group of Raven Boys…the way their personalities are so interwoven and difficult. The friendships aren’t easy for them, but they are extremely powerful.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, April. I’m glad you like the book, and hope you don’t skip any of those slow details, because the way Stiefvater writes, they will turn out to be critical at some point in the tale, I’m sure. 🙂

Will add to my never ending TBR list–my next priority is to read several books in the ‘gentle’ mystery genre by several authors with books in my queue: Evelyn Cullet, Marja McGraw and MM Gornell, I am also trying to finish the Hetta Coffey series [sort of mystery meets chicklit like my own series] Just Needs Killin’ by Jinx Schwartz is in the mix too. Will I ever get caught up? Oh, hell no! Thanks for piling on. LOL! Celeste

I’m reading Fire Kin by M.J. Scott, book 4 of this cool urban fantasy with romance series, with vampires, human, sunmages, Fae, and Beast Kin all trying to live in one city. And The Fox Bride, a rather strange book 2 in a series about an enchantress who’s always falling asleep, and is going to be married to a fox avatar of a god–by being entombed alive, because why not?

Okay, as far as wedding ceremonies go, I give it a 5 for creativity. 🙂 Fire Kin sounds good. Writing it down, Caitlin. Also, I have to say that re-reading The Raven Boys has turned out to be fantastic. This time around, I’m reading it with even more of an eye toward her writing style, and I have to say, she just blows me away. I think I’m going to review this again, because my first review wasn’t good enough. Her prose is so elegant and beautiful, it takes my breath away!
