My Rating: 5 of 5 Stars

After reading Aimee Easterling’s short story, Bloodling Wolf, I knew I would be interested in reading more about this well-developed world of werewolves.  Though I enjoy weres and shifters in well-written books, I wasn’t sure there was anything new to be found in the genre.  Easterling’s short story surprised me by throwing in some interesting twists I’d never seen before. I was eager to read the first novel in her new series. Shiftless did not disappoint.

I don’t want to say too much about the hero of the story, Wolfie, an alpha wolf who is more comfortable in his wolf form than his human one, or about the heroine for whom the book is named, Terra. This book has unexpected turns on every page, and I think it’s more fun for a reader to discover them as they happen, than for me to give them away here. But I will say that Terra has been without a pack for ten years, by choice, and as a result of her choice, has been unable to shift into her wolf form that entire time.

Wolfie, on the other hand, has an established pack of his own, many of whom are misfits who had never before found a place they belonged. That Terra will end up connecting with Wolife and find a home in his pack seems pre-destined, but don’t think that’s exactly how it all turns out. There are many more suprises in store, starting when Terra’s cruel and abusive father tracks her down, and forces her to make a choice she never thought she’d be faced with.

There is a sweet romance developing between Terra and Wolfie, appropriate for younger readers, and I was especially impressed with the solid, reliability of Wolfie’s nature. He’s stalwart and loyal, while being completely in control of his pack. He plays fair, and he’s always one step ahead of where you think he’ll be. While Terra is strongly attracted to him from the start, she has learned very little about him, as a person. I’m guessing that will change in future books, because I’d like to know more about him, myself. Of course, it helps to have read Bloodling Wolf  first, as it does give you some background on how and why Wolfie started his own pack.

The world-building is quite good in Shiftless, and I have no doubt the next book in the series will be equally strong and original. It will be fun to watch these characters come into their full potential. Nice job all around, and well set up for the next book.

To Win a FREE, SIGNED COPY of Shiftless, click here, then scroll down and enter by any of the various ways. The giveaway will be running all week, so tell your friends, too. And those of you who don’t win the free copy, head on over to amazon, anyway. You know you want this one!

Bookin’ It News!

T4sm

My Dancing Ladies orchid is blooming! No, that’s not really the news I want to talk about, but I’d figured I’d share it, too, just because it’s so beautiful this year. I couldn’t resist.

But what I really want to talk about is the direction this blog it about to take. Yes, I am still going to do book reviews, but due to the fact that writing has taken over such a large portion of my life, I don’t get to read quite as many books as I used to. So I’m planning to branch out a bit, just to give you guys some new and interesting things to look forward to, when I don’t have reviews to offer.

For instance, tomorrow, I will be doing a review combined with a week-long give-away. Those of you who enjoy YA urban fantasy will be interested to know that Aimee Easterling, author of Shiftless, will be giving away a signed copy of her book. We will be having a drawing, and you can enter all week long. I’ve read the book, and enjoyed it very much. Read more about my take on it tomorrow.

I also plan to do some author interviews. I really enjoy reading them, myself, and hope you will, as well.  My first one will feature Anna Celeste Burke, author of A Dead Husband. You mystery lovers will enjoy the book, and I hope you’ll enjoy reading Anna Celeste’s interview. You will be able to ask questions in the comments section, too.

And finally, I plan to take part in as many blog tours as I can, both for my own books and writing, and those of others that I can promote. On Friday, May 9, I will be taking part in the My Writing Process blog tour, and I’m looking forward to it very much. Not only will I have a chance to answer some questions on how I write, but I’ll be posting links and bios on three authors who will also be taking part in the tour. Please be sure to join us for that. I know you will learn about some authors you will really enjoy.

If you know anyone who would like to give me an author interview for a future post, please let me know. I’ll be happy to do what I can to set it up. And if you are running a blog tour, yourself, I’d love to join it, if I may.

So…interesting things afoot at Bookin’ It. Hope you’ll have fun checking out all the upcoming events.

Hope you’ll check it out.

A big, heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined Sezoni Whitfield and I on her Writer’s Kaboodle page for our author interview. I’ll confess, I was a little bit nervous going in, since I had no clue what it would be like, but I needn’t have worried. It was SO much fun! Sezoni did a great job, and I felt very comfortable there, chatting and answering questions about Wake-Robin Ridge. I got to see some old friends and meet some new ones, too. I can’t wait to do it again! Thank you for having me, Sezoni. I enjoyed every minute.

And It’s A Wrap!

claude_nancy_van_house2

It’s official! I have finished my second novel. The last chapter of Swamp Ghosts is edited and done, and next week, I’ll be formatting the book for Kindle. And if all goes well, the print version will follow just a few weeks after that. I’m so excited, I can hardly stand it!

Now that I’ve gotten this done, I’m planning to spend some time catching up on my blogs, and a few other things. Coming soon, a couple of author interviews with writers I’ve met over the months, and of course, more book reviews. I’ll also be keeping you guys updated on what’s going on with my books, as well. Of course. 🙂

But for right now, I think I’m just going to relax for the WHOLE WEEKEND. I can’t remember when I did that last! I think I still remember how. Maybe. 😀

You guys have a wonderful weekend, too. And stay tuned for more news, reviews, and interviews. (Is that poetry?) 😉

Update & Author Interview

ALMOST done! The final chapter of Swamp Ghosts is in my editor’s capable hands, and I’ll be working with my graphic designer Saturday to finish up the cover. Things are looking good for my projected release date of May 1. I’m so excited, I can hardly stand it!

For one thing, this book is exciting, if I do say so myself. And I do. 🙂 Lots of drama, including, but not limited to, alligators, snakes, and sociopathic killers. Yikes! And I think the love story part has come together pretty well, too. At least, I hope so. That all depends on the readers, of course, but I’ve worked hard to give Romantic Suspense fans a fun adventure with romance and danger in almost equal portions. I’ll have to wait for the verdict to see if I succeeded.

And my second exciting bit of news is that I’m doing my first Author Interview next Wednesday, April 23, at 8:00PM, on Sezoni Whitfield’s Writer’s Kaboodle Facebook Page. Yep, a virtual interview, live, as it happens. (Link Below) Please stop by and say hello. I’ll be answering Sezoni’s questions, of course, but I’ll also try to answer yours, as well. The interview will be 30 minutes long, so don’t be late! 🙂 It should be interesting and fun.

I’m counting on all my friends and followers to come on by, and hopefully, you’ll have a good time. You can ask questions about Wake-Robin Ridge, Swamp Ghosts, or writing in general, from my perspective. Here’s the link: Writer’s Kaboodle

I’m really looking forward to this event, and hope to do several more over the weeks ahead. See you then!

What is a Scene?

ByDLFernandez

Narrative is the telling of a story, the events and consequences for the characters. Scenes are those passages in a narrative when we, as writers and readers, slow down and focus on an important event in the story so that we are “in  the moment” with the characters in action.

Scene is Action

No matter the length (long or short, covering time compressed or stretched), Scene is Event. Something happening. As writers, we are called to present this moment in engaging a way as possible, drawing our readers into the moment with a vice grip that will not let them go.

Among the elements at our disposal to generate these scenes is Dialogue. While we aim to make the conversations between our characters authentic and accessible, dialogue in writing is sharper, shorter, and smarter than our everyday chats. Real talk is littered with “well’s” and “uh’s” and “so’s”, and to…
