The Distant Hours by Kate Morton
MY RATING: 3 of 5 Stars
I wanted to love this book…it had so many great elements going for it. But sadly, the first half of the book was way too long and too slow for me. I normally quite like character studies and really delving into what makes people tick, but this book carried that too far, and I was nearly ready to stop reading many times. In fact, I’m not sure why I continued, except I wanted to see if I was right about the answer to the various mysteries. (I was, in all but one instance.)
Thankfully, the second half of the book began to pick up speed and become a lot more interesting. I enjoyed it much more than the first half, and I was glad I made it to the finish line. However, it was still too long and slow, and it will be forevermore known in my mind as “The Distant Ending.” I can’t honestly recommend it with a clear conscience. Most of my friends would not likely hang on as long as I did.
A shame, because I think Kate Morton is a fine writer. I loved “The Forgotten Garden,” but this one didn’t really work for me.
