What Are You Going to Read?
Yep, that’s what I asked…what are you going to read? What’s next in your To Be Read pile? Or by any chance, do you, like me, have a few extra special book treats you’ve been holding to one side to disappear into when you have some reading time that’s likely to be uninterrupted for a while? I’ve had several books that I’m DYING to read, but haven’t started on because I just didn’t want to keep getting pulled out of them by work, chores, or Life, in general. I kept telling myself to go ahead and start on them, because such a sweet stretch of uninterrupted time wasn’t likely to happen. But guess what? It IS going to happen. Sort of.
In late July–not really as far away as it sounds–I’m having foot surgery done on my left foot, involving several issues, to include putting in a steel pin, which, as it happens, means it will then match my right one. I’ll be setting off metal detectors everywhere! 🙂 The upshot of the surgery (besides ending some very significant pain) is that I will be pretty much out of commission for the better part of six weeks. Yes, I said SIX WEEKS!! The first two, I won’t be doing anything other than sitting in the Comfy Chair with my foot propped on pillows all day long. After that, it will be a gradual transition to a wheelchair, and then to crutches.
Soooo….Reading Time, here I come!! And those extra special books I’ve been hoarding are going to be enjoyed to the max! Things like Dean Koontz’s Saint Odd, the final installment in his wonderful Odd Thomas series. And Maggie Steifvater’s Blue Lily, Lily Blue, the third installment of her Raven Cycle series, which I adore, and which touches something in my heart to the point that I want no interruptions at all when I’m in that world. I’ve got Lee Child’s latest Jack Reacher book, Make Me, for some kick butt and take no names action, and Patricia Briggs’ newest Alpha & Omega offering, Dead Heat, for some Urban Fantasy with a power couple I thoroughly enjoy. And I’m finally going to start that massive first book of the Game of Thrones series, A Song of Ice and Fire.
Should I finish all of those, I have dozens more, both in my TBR basket, and on my Kindle, I can move on to, so don’t feel sorry for me, stuck at home for weeks and weeks. I’ll actually be off on lots and lots of adventures, having a great time!

PS…when you get a chance, I’m looking forward to your input on my new additions to Finding Hunter…the last of the “quotes.” I like that you see things from a writer’s standpoint.

That’s be great. It’s always tricky to find someone to read over the weekend. 🙂 But I don’t want to start on CH 19 until I feel at least pretty good about what I’ve done with these, so far. They still need tweaks, but I’m hoping they’re going to work for me. 🙂

I have quite a stack set aside but I am also a member of Goodreads and recurve a books about once a week from them and in the last few months I joined net galley and I always have a list there to be read. None of that includes those authors that are dear to my heart that I put in front of everything else. Now I just have to figure out how and get a blog going. No point in keeping all these great stories and authorities to myself.

Don’t spend too many “one days” not writing, then. We never know how many of those we’ve been allotted. So, I say…write! I wasted way too many years, myself, that I’ll never get back. But I’m trying to make up for lost time. 🙂

I have plenty of books on my shelves to keep me busy for a while – not that it stops me from buying new ones at any given chance, of course 😉
I hope your surgery goes smoothly. As they say, every cloud has a silver lining, and at least you can look forward to some well earned rest and reading time! 🙂

Yes, but do you have any that you have put aside to save for a special time, when no one will bother you, and you can indulge in another world for as long as you want? I have dozens and dozens, but a special few, I’ve been deliberately holding onto, so I could lose myself in them for hours and hours at a time. Oh, yum!!
And thank you, Callum. Now that I’ve thought about it from this standpoint, I’m almost looking forward to it all. 😀 That, and the part where after it’s all healed, inside and out, I just might be able to walk pain-free for a change. Wow. What a concept! 😀

I tend to mostly pick books as and when I go to my shelf, so I can read based on what I’m in the mood for at any given time. I have been saving ‘The Enchanted’ by Rene Denfeld for a little while though, as I’m expecting it to be quite heavy-going and want to be in the right frame of mind to absorb it. I’ve also been planning a re-read (which is rare for me) of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ – It’s my favourite childhood classic and I want to revisit the world when I’m in the mood for something really whimsical 🙂

Ah-ha. You have those two that you’ve been waiting on. I’m holding the Game of Thrones book for the same reason you’re holding The Enchanted. I think it’s going to be slower reading, and possibly heavier going than my typical reads, and I want to be able to follow the story without getting hopelessly lost. I’ve been holding the Stiefvater book, too, because I find these characters profoundly moving, and need to be in the right frame of mind to read it. But I just realized I don’t actually have the Lee Child book on my Kindle yet. It’s not out until September. 😦 For some reason, I thought I had already gotten it. Guess is it was a pre-order. But I have enough other good ones on my shelf to fill in, should I finish the rest on my list. I’m also planning to read the Brandon Sanderson fantasy, Elantris, which I DO have on my Kindle, so maybe I’ll add it to my July/August list.
I fully expect to come through this surgery with my foot issues VASTLY improved. I’m afraid I’m going to have to insist on it! I do NOT want to deal with this again any time soon. 😀

I’ve heard great things about Stiefvater’s writing but I’m yet to read any of her books. I’ve had my eye on that series for a while though!

Her writing is beyond just beautiful. The Scorpio Races, a stand-alone book, is one of my favorite books, ever, by anyone. And The first two books of The Raven Cycle were just so powerful. Her characters walk right off the pages. I want to be her when I grow up. 😀
You should bump her to the top of your list. I’d love to know what you think of The Scorpio Races. Trust me…blurbs don’t do it justice. Neither do reviews. It’s beautiful. Period. And her writing style will appeal to the poet in your soul.

I’ll be really surprised if you don’t like it. It’s very dark…as is a lot of her writing…but so beautiful, and shivery. From a review: “On a small Irish island, there is a special race every November. Many men and boys ride the capaill uisce — the swift, beautiful, bloodthirsty water horses, which want to either drown their riders or eat their flesh. They often succeed.” See. Shivers. But oh, Puck and Sean Kendrick…wonderful. As is Sean’s capaill uisce, Corr.
Hmm. I’m getting the urge to re-read this. Soon. Let me know what you think, if you give it a go. Everyone is different, but I think the writing will work for you.

I don’t have the patience to save books, but the next book I’m reading is The Outlaws of Sherwood by Robin McKinley.

Ha. I have lots to choose from, but some that I want to really, really SAVOR simply must be held until I’ve got the time to immerse myself in them. I’m going to start with Blue Lily, Lily Blue. I simply have to know what happens to Gansey. (Sometimes I postpone reading because I’m scared something is going to happen that will wreck me for weeks. This is one of those times.) 😀
And I’m sorry, but the Outlaws of Sherwood is written by ROBIN McKinley????

Yes, but…did she write about Sherwood because her name is ROBIN? Or does she go by Robin because she’s interested in the Outlaws of Sherwood (Forest)? 🙂

Oh, I got ‘cha. I’m pretty sure that’s the name her parents gave her. And she writes all kind of retellings, so I don’t know if she chose this one based on her name or not. Maybe she did.
