Shifting Shadows by Patricia Briggs

Shifting Shadows is an anothology that includes every short story set in Mercy Thompson’s world from older collections, plus four brand new stories, two of which are actually novellas. For me, the new stories alone were worth the price of admission, but I also like having all of these stories in one very nice collection.
I enjoyed revisiting some of the older tales that I had forgotten about, and I like all of the new ones, but my favorite of all is “Silver,” a novella that goes hundreds of years back in time to tell the story of Bran and Samuel, and the witch who made them werewolves. It was sad and dark, but beautifully done, and I will look at each of those characters a bit differently in future books.
If you are a Patricia Briggs fan and already familiar with Mercy Thompson and friends, Shifting Shadows should be part of your library. Yeah, another cover I don’t like, but that’s an issue for some other time. I can overlook that in favor of the solid writing inside, and a chance to spend an afternoon with old friends, and new. Check it out. I don’t think you’ll be sorry.

I know Patricia Briggs signed off on the artist’s concept of Mercy, but I also know I’m not alone in wishing the covers portrayed her the way Briggs describes her. Oh, well. It’s not enough to keep me from following the series, which I’ve done from the start. And this book is terrific. I LOVED the story of Bran and Samuel! But pretty much, I love all the stories in it. Briggs is a very strong writer, and her characters always ring true to me. Nice to see you here this afternoon! 🙂 I’m working away on keywords and categories, so I can upload A Boy Named Rabbit today! SO hate this step!!! 😦

I love the Bran character – he is one of my very favorites. More so than Adam (ducking from rocks being thrown at my head!)
Bran is such a deep character, mentally and emotionally. He has made some terrible decisions over time – but at the same time, he always tries to do what he considers to be his best for everyone, often at the cost of his own happiness. I always love it so much when he shows up in the storyline!

I like Bran, too. He’s fascinating. But my real favorite is Charles. I love that character! Far more appealing to me than Adam. I mean, Adam’s okay, and I’m glad he & Mercy are a happy couple now, but Charles and Anna are something else. I’ve learned to love the Alpha & Omega series even more than Mercy, though I still wouldn’t miss any of her stories.
