What Are You Reading?
It’s not Friday…I missed that, sadly…but I figure it’s never too late to let you know what I’m reading, especially when it’s something really, really good. So, here it is. This week, I’m reading Jen Rasmussen’s Ghost in the Canteen, and it’s brilliant! Jen’s writing is strong, sharp, funny, and engaging. And great goobley-oobley! This story is scary! Horror fans will love it, for sure, and anyone who likes ghost stories, tales of the supernatural, and unique world building will, as well. Plus, you might learn a thing or two you didn’t know before. Like…what is a switchel ring? In fact, what is switchel? Do you know? I didn’t. But now I do!
Ghost in the Canteen is so good, I’m going to recommend you go right ahead and buy your copy today, even before my full review comes out next week. I don’t think you’ll be sorry.

Just started Annie West’s The Rebel’s Bargain (part of the Chatsfield series which I haven’t caught up with) and then moving onto Annie Seaton’s The Emerald Quest: Capturing the Pirate’s Heart (book 1). Getting into good series now!

Hi, sourris25! Thanks for letting us know. I’m taking notes, as always. DARN, though…there are so many books I want to read, and so few hours for reading in my days, now. 😦 But I’m keeping a list, and working my way through them. Haven’t read any of these, so they’re going right on it.

Replying to myself to note that that “instead” is there because I meant to say that I’ve set aside Diana Gabaldon’s Dragonfly in Amber for the moment. I’m sure I’ll get back to the Outlander series, but I was starting to feel bogged down in that second book.

I couldn’t finish the Gabaldon series, myself, though I ADORED the first book, for sure. I read it when it first came out, and wouldn’t mind going back through the standing stones for another visit. 🙂 Haven’t started Aimee’s book yet, but I will, and you are most welcome for my kind words. I meant them. I’m about 75% done with Ghost in the Canteen, and I just love it. I’m already looking forward to the next book, and I don’t even know yet how this one’s going to end. It’s certainly not been predictable so far, and I doubt the ending will be, either.

I’m just about to start on Maggie Stiefvater’s Forever, and part of the way through a sad, thoughtful little book about religion and suppression of art called The Last Summer of Reason by Tahar Djaout.

I really enjoyed Stiefvater’s series, Caitlin, as you know. And I think her writing has done nothing but get stronger and stronger with her more recent books. I’ll be interested in your final take. Not familiar with the second book, but it sounds interesting. Thanks for stopping by tonight. Always good to hear from you.

Oh, the Raven Boys…I have #3 waiting for me, like a beautiful dessert. The anticipation is so much fun, I’m tormenting myself with it. 😀

I second Marcia’s suggestion that you read Ghost in the Canteen — the story has really stuck with me and I’m itching for the sequel! However, since Jen isn’t likely to publish book two immediately, I’m replacing her book now with The Indie Author Power Pack, which is entertaining and informative but which requires frequent bouts of digestion.
During those digestive periods, I read fiction, of course. Tonight, I’m about to pick up Huntbound, which is the second installment in the surprisingly good Moonfate Serial by Sylvia Frost. It’s surprising because I didn’t think I liked serials, but this is a great take on werewolves and the episodes appear to stand okay alone.

Yeah, Ghost in the Canteen isn’t quite like any other ghost story I’VE ever read, for sure. And the Power Pack series is a great collection for every self-published author. I am working my way through Write.Publish.Repeat. and have learned so many things. The books turns a great deal of the traditional advice we’ve been using to sell through amazon, etc, on its ear. Things that worked 2 years ago just aren’t working as well today, and I find their suggestions make a great deal of sense. I’m going to do things differently in the future, for sure, thanks to that book alone. I’ve read the Gaughran book, and when I finish WPR, I’ll start in on the Penn book. I already follow that blog, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy it.
Will compare notes with you when I’m done, and see what you gleaned. Thanks for taking the time to share with us, Aimee. I appreciate that.
