Meet My Main Character Blog Tour

Last week, I was invited by author Stella Tarakson to take part in a new blog tour, this one focusing on a main character from one of our books. Stella writes books for children and young adults, and lives Down Under, so I’m always confused about what day it is when I’m talking to her. (No big deal. I spend half of my life confused about one thing or the other.) But no matter what day of the week it is where Stella lives, I’m very happy to participate in this fun blog tour. And now for my answers to the Meet My Main Character Blog Tour questions.

1. What is the name of your main character? Is she fictional or a historic person?

I have published two romantic suspense novels in the last year, so I had to toss a coin. Maggie Devlin from Swamp Ghosts won. She is entirely fictional, though she certainly reflects elements of various women I have known, including myself.

2. When and where is the story set?

Swamp Ghosts takes place in 2012, and the setting is in the little fictional town of Riverbend, located in central Florida. Much of the book deals with eco-tours on the St. Johns River, and canoeing the small creeks and streams of the St. Johns River basin. The natural habitats and wildlife of central Florida are as much a part of the book as the human characters, with an accent on certain very rare and unusual, ghostly-looking reptiles.

3. What should we know about her?

Maggie is a damaged, angry person when the book opens. She’s been divorced from an abusive husband for eight years, and has no interest in even dating another man. She’s pretty sure she hates them all. Very knowledgable about wildlife and birds, she’s the owner/captain of an eco-tour boat, taking groups out for cruises on the St. Johns River. It’s a job she loves, though making ends meet has become almost impossible, therefore, she’s forced to consider finding other ways to supplement her income.

4. What is the main conflict? What messes up her life?

A man, of course. Or in this case, two, with very different ideas of how to treat a woman. First, along comes a huge Viking of a man, Gunnar Wolfe, a wildlife photographer who wants to hire Maggie to help him hunt for the rarest of the rare. He dreams of landing a cover on an issue of National Geographic Magazine, and is hunting specifically for something he’d like to keep top secret. Maggie needs the extra income, though she is predisposed to hate this good-looking guy on sight. As she gets to know him, keeping things strictly business becomes considerably more difficult. Then, to make matters worse, just when she thinks she might be willing to give men a second chance, a second man enters her life. This one is not out to show Maggie a good time. He’s a serial killer, stalking his victims in and around the tiny town of Riverbend, and he has made both Maggie and Gunn targets for his twisted rage.

5. What is her personal goal?

Initially, simply to stay solvent. To pay her bills and avoid bankruptcy. After spending a lot of time on the river with Gunn, her goals begin to shift towards finding a way to heal emotionally and learn to love again. And finally, her goal becomes to stay alive when she and Gunn discover themselves in mortal peril. 

6. Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it?

Swamp Ghosts: A Riverbend Novel  is the title of the book. There are excerpts from the book on this blog, and a full description on amazon.com

7. When can we expect the book to be published?

Swamp Ghosts was published in Kindle format on May 1, 2014, and will be available in print form within the next few days.
