Time for a bit more creepy with this one. Hope it makes you shiver. A bit.  🙂

Swamp Ghosts Chapter 4 Excerpt

THE ROOM WAS lit only by two small nightlights on each side of the dirty mattress. He liked it dark, knowing it would add an extra element of fear. There needed to be just enough light for him to see the terror in the eyes of his latest…guest…or it wouldn’t be nearly enough fun. Leaving the rest of the room shrouded in darkness was exactly the type of horror movie effect he wanted to achieve.
He’d been gone several hours, and now the girl was lying on her side, curled into a protective ball–as if those pale little arms wrapped around her body could save her from him. He stood there contemplating various ways to wake her up, each guaranteed to bring her screaming into consciousness as she struggled against the restraints.
His worktable was nearby, and he surveyed his array of instruments and devices. This was really an art form, and deciding on the right knife or razor was part of the creative process. Sometimes just holding one of his blades where his prey could see it was so rewarding, he went over the edge before he even started cutting.
Finally, he selected a wickedly sharp butcher knife, the wide blade gleaming in the low light. The mere sight of it would have her whimpering and begging immediately, and then the real fun would begin.
“Wakey-wakey, Precious,” he called softly. When there was no response, he knelt down on the floor next to the stained mattress, and called louder. “Wake up, Princess. It’s show time.”
     Nothing.
Frowning, he grabbed her arm, and realized she was cold and stiff. “What the hell? You’re dead? I’ve only had you three days. I haven’t done half the things I wanted to do to you, you bitch!”
He got to his feet and aimed a vicious kick at her head, where her once blonde hair hung in sticky, brown clumps. “I barely got to have a good time at all. You haven’t even bled that much yet! I knew you were a bitch, as soon as I saw you walking through that park.”
He lashed out in a blind rage, kicking her again and again and again, until he grew tired and stormed out of the room, locking the door behind him. He clomped back downstairs in a fury. No one had ever died on him this fast before. Now, he’d have to make a midnight run down to the river much sooner than he had planned.

    • Thanks, Felix. It will be out in print before too long, and I know someone who can get you a copy. 😉 I think you’ll find reading it straight through a much different experience from being a Beta reader. 😀 Good to see you here today. So glad you have a working computer again.
