So Many Books. So Little Time. Let's Review!

Wicked Appetite by Janet Evanovich

My Rating: 3-1/2 out of 5 Stars

Anyone who has read Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series knows how funny she can be.  This spin-off series is no exception.  It might not win any prizes for originality, but you just can’t read it without giggling here and there.  Lizzy and Diesel were introduced in Stephanie’s world in the four books called the “Between the Numbers” books: Visions of Sugar Plums, Plum Lovin’, Plum Lucky, and Plum Spooky.  Each is focused on a holiday, to wit, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and Halloween.  Consider them Stephanie Plum’s introduction to The Dark Side, where things go bump in the night, and an apparent test to see if there was a market for a Stephanie type world with a bit of “woo-woo” going on.  It would appear they did well enough for Evanovich to start the Lizzy and Diesel series, and Wicked Appetite is book number one.

Yes, I could go through the characters in the new series and relate each one of them to Stephanie’s friends and family back in the Burg, but why bother? So what if it all seems a bit familiar, but with a change of setting from New Jersey to Salem? And who cares if Lizzy has two sexy men in her life–a good one and a not-so-good one–who think they have some sort of claim on her, a la Stephanie’s Morelli and Ranger? This is not serious stuff, here.  It’s meant to be amusing, and I think it is, assuming you don’t go into it expecting something new and different. (Only the names have been changed is a phrase that comes to mind.)  But the story is still funny, the men are sexy, and the heroine is a nice gal who tries her best, and means well.  If you are getting bored with Stephanie’s World, then this one won’t be your cup of tea, but if you can still get a giggle out of the ragtag assortment of misfit folks from The Burg, you’ll probably enjoy a trip to Salem with Lizzy The Pastry Chef and her coterie.  Myself, I can always use a good chuckle, so I had fun, and I’m looking forward to starting the next book, Wicked Business, very soon.
