An Apple For The Creature edited by Charlaine Harris and Toni P. Kelner

Charlaine Harris & Toni P. Kelner's An Apple for the Creature Cover

My Rating:  4 of 5 Stars

I’m sure it’s well-known by anyone following my blog that I love good anthologies, and An Apple for the Creature definitely qualifies for that designation.  I really enjoyed this collection of short stories featuring tales of “Unnatural Education.”  There were quite a few strong entries, and almost no weak ones.  I even enjoyed the Sookie Stackhouse story, though I gave up on what had been a beloved series for me about 3 books ago.  (The reasons for that will probably be dealt with in another review someday.  Maybe.)

Personally, I enjoyed a few entries more than others, including Thomas E. Sniegoski’s “The Bad Hour.”  His black lab, Marlowe, was so endearing, I’m planning to start the Remy Chandler books as soon as I can squeeze them into my To Be Read basket.  Nancy Holder’s “VSI” story held my attention all the way through, though I thought the ending was a bit of a let-down.  But best of all, “Magic Tests,” by Ilona Andrews, was another great story from the wonderful world of Kate Daniels and her Beast Lord, Curran.  Yeah, sounds hokey, but their Magic series is so much fun!  Anyone who enjoys well-written Urban Fantasy ought to like it, if you ask me.  (Okay, nobody asked me, but I’m volunteering anyway.)

I will say that one story, Mike Carey’s “Iphigenia in Aulis,” was my least favorite story in the book.  I haven’t been a fan of the Felix Castor stories, and now I know it is probably because Carey’s writing just doesn’t work for me.  Plus, I found the premise of this story absurdly repugnant.   Other than that, the book is a strong entry into the Urban Fantasy anthology field.

What I love most about anthologies is getting to “test drive” a lot of writers who are new to me.  I nearly always find one or two worth checking out in the future.  And once again, I have added a couple of names to my Must Read More Of list.
