Falling Together by Marisa de los Santos

Marisa de los Santos' Falling Together Cover

My Rating: 5 of 5 Stars

I didn’t think it was possible to love a book more than I loved Marisa de los Santos’ first book, Love Walked In,   but I was wrong.  Falling Together is the most profoundly beautiful love story I’ve read in years…maybe ever. The sheer poetry of the language, combined with the astonishingly beautiful portrayal of “imperative love” left me utterly breathless.

Marisa de los Santos was a poet before she began writing novels, and poetry shows in every line of her prose writing, as well. Falling Together  tells the story of three college students who develop an extraordinary friendship before graduating and moving forward with their individual lives.  But some ties can’t be broken by time or distance, and some friendships can become more than anyone ever expects.

At first, I thought maybe I wouldn’t be able to identify with these very young characters, but when their story picks up some years after their time together at school, it all fell into place for me.  I was pulled into this tender and moving story on every level, and I highly recommend Falling Together to anyone who enjoys an introspective study into what makes even flawed human beings tick.  Because there are flaws.  But in the end, those flaws only served to make me love at least two of these characters without reservation.  One of the three was less admirable to my mind, but I’ll let you figure that out for yourself, over the course of this gorgeously written book.

When I finished the last page, I just wanted to go sit in a peaceful corner and ponder the sheer pleasure offered by a writer with the imagination to describe the unexpected sight of a fox as an “impossible long, lean pour of orange.” Bliss!!

  3. I am SO glad I stumbled across this post because I read Love Walked In a while ago and had no idea she had another beautiful book floating around out there. And as someone who just parted ways with my college roommates and moved into my own apartment, this might be good timing.

  4. Hi, Kaleigh! She actually has TWO other books, one a sequel to Love Walked In called Belong To Me. It is absolutely PERFECT, and if you liked LWI, you will want to read it. I didn’t think Love Walked In needed a sequel, but I was wrong. Belong to Me is wonderful.

Now as for Falling Together, I actually think it is the best of the three, just because the story is so poignant and touching. And of course, gloriously romantic! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. And be sure to check out Belong To Me.

Thanks for stopping by! Hope you’ll visit often.

In addition to my Tuesday Review (coming later today), I thought I would start re-running a few of my favorite reviews from time to time. I’ve chosen Falling Together to be the first, because I can’t think of any book more beautiful. If you love exquisite writing and deeply moving love stories, this is the one book you can’t miss! Check out the review, and then go buy the book. You won’t be sorry!
