Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos

MY RATING:  5 of 5 Stars

There are readers out there more worldly and cynical than I,  perhaps, who manage to find fault with this book, but for me, it was one of the best surprises I’ve come across in years.  The title makes it sound like sappy, frothy Chick Lit.  It is anything but!  The story of Cornelia, who has gone through life looking for her own personal Cary Grant to show up and sweep her off her feet,  lays bare the secret desires of most of the women I know.  Unrealistically  or not, somewhere deep in our heart of hearts, we each long for that devastingly handsome and wildly romantic lover to come along .   And the voice of 11-year old Clare, struggling to make sense of her young life being turned upside down, is painfully poignant.   The friendship that develops between these two very different characters will take you on a journey of love and discovery you won’t soon forget.

I was particularly fond of the many references to old movies and actors,  and all those innocent romantic comedies of yesterday.  I recognized each Hollywood reference, since I was around when most of these movies were made. But being unfamiliar with these actors and films should not hamper your enjoyment of  this story at all.

Marissa de los Santos has become one of my very favorite authors.  She was a poet before turning to fiction,  and it shows in every line she writes.  Her turns of phrase are breathtaking at times, in all of her books.  If you long for an old-fashioned love story, this is it.  If you love strongly written coming of age stories, this is it.  And if you just love very good writing, this is REALLY it.  Try it, and see if you agree!

The sequel to this book, “Belong To Me,” is every bit as lovely and powerful.  I remember thinking to myself, “Love Walked In” didn’t really need a sequel, but I was wrong.  Be sure to read “Belong To Me,”  if you enjoy “Love Walked In” as much as I did.

Let the romance carry you away.   You KNOW you want to…and after all, who’s watching?

You recommended this book and I loved the relationships among all the characters. The way the plot was moved along was very effective.

  2. Hi, Rebecca! So nice to “see” you here again! And I’m really glad you enjoyed the book. I’m always surprised (maybe even shocked) when I see the occasional bad review of “Love Walked In.” Invariably, it’s when someone finds it corny. To me, there is a huge difference between a beautiful, deeply imagined love story, and a corny light romance, but different strokes, I guess. After reading her first three books, I’ll read pretty much anything Marisa de los Santos writes.

Hope you’ll keep checking in. You never know what I might be posting next! *grin* And your thoughts are ALWAYS welcome!
