My Favorite Cover Art
I don’t know about you, but I purely LOVE cover art. It can make all the difference in the world, when the artist gets it right. And getting it right must surely be tricky. The cover needs to catch the eye, so the book stands out from all the other books on the shelf. It should also give you a sense of what the book is about. Capture the mood. Display a reasonable portrait of the main character, as described by the book’s author. Possibly add some little hints of surprises that might be in store for the reader. But most of all, for me, it should be drop dead gorgeous.
My favorite cover artist, hands down, is Chris McGrath, who has created beautiful covers for some of my favorite Urban Fantasy series: Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files, Rob Thurman’s Leandros Brothers books, Seanan McGuire’s Toby Daye series, Clay Griffiths’ Vampire Empire series, and many more. Just feast your eyes on these beautiful samples of his work! (Click to zoom on any image.)
Beautiful, right? Stop by McGrath’s Website and check out his work for yourself. You can even get a signed print of any of his cover art for a very reasonable price. I did. The prints come without all the writing, of course, and frame up beautifully. Perfect for hanging over your bookshelf. In the weeks ahead, I hope to feature a lot more good cover art, and I’d love to hear about your favorites, too.
